America's Top Military Commander to Israel
The top US General is arriving in Israel for a series of discussions focused on Iran, days after Iran announced it had completed enriching its first batch of uranium to 20 percent. Admiral Michael Mullen, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, is on a sweeping visit of the Middle East, having started in Egypt and continuing to Jordan after Israel. Mullen, who has urged Israel to hold off any strike against Iran’s nuclear targets, is the latest in a flurry of top US security officials to visit Israel. Last week Lt.-Gen. Paul Selva, Mullen’s top assistant, visited Israel. His visit came on the heels of secret meetings with America’s National Security Adviser James Jones, CIA Director Leon Panetta and other top US generals. Israeli security officials are quoted as saying the Americans want to “calm us down” to allow sanctions against Iran a chance before other modes of action are considered.
