Don left this as a comment on the other post, but I think they are wonderful verses to contemplate in light of the world's opinion of Israel and the direction the leaders of our government are taking with regards to Jerusalem. Jeremiah puts it in definite terms: if the sun and moon cease to be, then so will Israel cease to be a nation... can't spiritualize that away or say it was fulfilled in the past and doesn't mean anything today!!!!
Isaiah 31:5
As birds flying, so will the LORD of hosts defend Jerusalem; defending also he will deliver it; and passing over he will preserve it.
Jeremiah 31:35,36
Thus says the LORD,
Who gives the sun for a light by day,
The ordinances of the moon and the stars for a light by night,
Who disturbs the sea,
And its waves roar
(The LORD of hosts is His name):
“If those ordinances depart
From before Me, says the LORD,
Then the seed of Israel shall also cease
From being a nation before Me forever.
